Toronto The 34th instalment of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will open with a gala presentation of Jon Amiel’s Creation, which tells the life story of Charles Darwin.
The world premiere coincides with the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth, and has been tagged as part ghost story, part psychological thriller and part love story. It stars Paul Bettany (The Da Vinci Code, Wimbledon) as Darwin, and Jennifer Connelly (He’s Just Not That Into You, The Day the Earth Stood Still) as Darwin’s wife Emma. The pair previously appeared on screen together in A Beautiful Mind.
“The tension between faith and reason is prominent in contemporary culture and this intimate look at Darwin puts a human face on a man whose theory remains controversial to this day,” said Piers Handling, director and CEO of TIFF.
This year, TIFF will also feature Steven Soderbergh’s agri-industry/FBI flick Informant!, starring Matt Damon, and Jane Campion’s Bright Star, about the surreptitious love affair between John Keats and student Fanny Brawne. Ricky Gervais will debut his new comedy The Invention of Lying, Edward Norton plays a pair of twins in the world premiere of Leaves of Grass and Clive Owen heads the cast of The Boys Are Back, about a widower raising his two sons on his own.
